The lore was thin but sticky. White Snake Afloat was supposedly the final, unreleased film of the notoriously erratic auteur, Julian Croft. He’d vanished in 1996 after burning the only print of his first film, Rats in the Walls . For decades, collectors spoke of a second film, a nautical horror shot entirely on a derelict Chinese junk boat in the South China Sea. The only evidence was a single, corrupted .jpg of a film canister labeled “SNAKE AFLOAT - DO NOT PROJECT.” The audio was a hiss of tape static,

Leo never downloaded another film again. But sometimes, late at night, he hears the slow, rhythmic creak of a ship’s hull. He feels a cold draft, smells salt water, and sees, in the corner of his vision, a white shape moving just beneath the surface of the dark.

He sat in the dark, hyperventilating, for a long time. Finally, he crawled to his bed, clutching a blanket like a child. He didn’t sleep.

Leo was a believer. And tonight, the impossible had surfaced on a Russian torrent tracker with a skull-and-crossbones rating.
