The origins of the Libro de Ifa date back to the ancient Oyo Empire, which flourished in the 14th to 18th centuries. During this time, the Yoruba people developed a sophisticated system of divination, which was based on the casting of palm nuts or shells, known as “obis.” The Ifa priests and priestesses, known as “babalawos,” would interpret the patterns and combinations of the obis to gain insight into the past, present, and future.
